Helmold, Herman 'Pete'
Herman “Pete” Helmold, 92, of Clarence, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at the Clarence Nursing Home. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at St. John's United Church of Christ, Clarence, with the Rev. David Mears officiating. Burial: church cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence.
Born June 29, 1918, on the family farm in rural Clarence, he was the son of Heinrich and Sophie (Deerberg) Helmold. He married Margaret Anderson on Aug. 8, 1940, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. “Pete” farmed all his life on the family farm south of Clarence until moving to Clarence in 1978.
He served on the council of St. John's Reformed Church in Tipton and later transferred to St. John's United Church of Christ, Clarence. He served on the Clarence Telephone Board for 18 years.
“Pete” was a mild-mannered man who cared deeply for his family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was an avid bird-watcher and dog lover.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret; daughters, Janice Bock of Sebring, Fla., and Beverly (Robert) Skladzien of Maquoketa; son, Allen (Deborah) of Lowden; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Leona Conrad of Clarence.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leonard; infant sister, Norma; and son-in-law, Neil Bock.
