Shirley Jean Mudd, 75, passed away April 12, 2017 in her home after a short illness. Her loyal companion, Jimmy Matthews, and sister, Marilyn Schulte, were at her side. Friends and family are invited to join in a short graveside ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday, April 21, at Campbell Cemetery, Bertram. A luncheon will follow from noon to 5 p.m. at Knights of Columbus, 1620 E Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids.

Shirley is survived by her sons, John Lincoln and Cedar Rapids and Michael Todd (Cindy) of Ely; sisters, Marilyn Schulte of Los Angeles and Julie (John) Carson of Mission Viejo, Calif.; and her dear friend, Jimmy Matthews of Mount Vernon. She has also left behind her grandchildren, Kassidy Jean, Carson Benny, Riley Lincoln, Taylor Mary and Makenzie Nicole; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Benny; parents, Elliot Heusman and Verla Mae Pixler Heusman-Wold; brother, Gene Heusman; and brother-in-law, Robert Schulte.

Mrs. Mudd was born in Postville, Iowa, on Dec. 13, 1941. She moved to Cedar Rapids in 1957, where she met and married the love of her life, Benny Mudd, on Dec. 17, 1960. They were married until his untimely death in 1998.

Shirley spent 17 years working in the office of Wilson Packinghouse and was noted the first female Realtor in Cedar Rapids at Lucken Realtors. Benny and Shirley also owned and operated the Butterfly Cafe in downtown Cedar Rapids. She was self-taught in drums and piano. Shirley was very proud of her cooking skills and they were enjoyed by countless people.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be left for the Mercy Hospice House in Shirley's name as they provided so much comfort to her in recent days.
