IOWA CITY — It was a longer process than he expected, but Evan Flitz has finally found a college home. He's headed west.
Way west.
The all-state quarterback from Iowa City West announced Sunday night that he has committed to play football at Pomona College in Southern California. The Sagehens have a NCAA Division III program.
'Pomona College offers me the place where I will pursue my academic and athletic apsirations to the fullest, as well as explore and develop as a person,' Flitz said on Twitter. 'Though far from Iowa City, the friendships and culture of my hometown will continue to inspire me.'
Flitz, named Iowa's Gatorade Player of the Year, led the state with 2,978 passing yards this past season, leading West to the Class 4A state championship game for a second year in a row. He threw 31 touchdowns to just five interceptions.
Originally, Flitz said he hoped to have a college decision made by the Christmas holidays. He had interest from programs at various levels, including a walk-on offer from Northwestern.
But he is a brilliant student with a perfect grade-point average and said all along that would play a major factor in where he would go.
