Dale was born Nov. 4, 1931, the son of Ermund and Anna (Becker) Butz, in Norway, where the family lived until he was 10. They moved to a farm in rural Walker. Dale graduated from Walker High School in 1949. He farmed and later worked for the Linn County Secondary Roads Department for 22 years. On June 15, 1954, Dale married Marna Morrissey. Together the couple had four children. She passed away on May 9, 1991. He later married Sandra (Schmidt) Thompson on June 6, 1992.
Dale belonged to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he had served on the parish council, choir and RCIA. He was a member of the Walker Community Singers. Dale enjoyed family, church, gardening, fruit trees, teasing the kids, making his annual "Easter Bunny" pinata and, last but not least, his best friend, "Buddy."
Dale is survived by his wife, Sandra; two daughters, Marsha (Kregg) Kramer and Jenice Butz, of both of Marion; two sons, Mark (Amy) Butz of Cedar Rapids and Joe (Melody) Butz of Center Point; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Darlene Hunter of Cedar Rapids and Lois Verdow of Marion; three stepdaughters; two stepsons; two stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and a very special family, Nick and Becky Ford and their three children.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marna; sister, Ione Arnold; three brothers-in-law; and a nephew.
