Library celebrating Sherlock Holmes' anniversary
IOWA CITY - The Iowa City Public Library is hosting several upcoming events to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the publication of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.”
The events take place in Meeting Room A at the library, 123 S. Linn St. Here is a look at the offerings:
- Will the Real Sherlock Holmes Please Stand Up? - 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Monica Schmidt, president of the Younger Stamfords of Iowa City, a Sherlock Holmes literary society, explores where literature ends and the pop culture begins.
- Sherlock Holmes in Turn of the Century Britain - 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Richard Caplan, author of 'Dr. Watson, Mr. Sherlock Holmes: The Adventures of Young Stamford and Other Sherlockiana,” explores the persisting phenomenon of the great detective.
- Sherlock Holmes Movie Marathon - 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9. The event features screenings of some of the best Sherlock Holmes programs to appear on film and television, including, at 9 a.m., 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” (1939), starring Basil Rathbone and, at 1:30 p.m., 'Sherlock Holmes” (2009), starring Robert Downey Jr.
