Each January, we pause to remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King dedicated his life to improving the lives of those in his community and across America, regardless of their religion, race, or sex. At the core of his beliefs was an unwavering dedication to helping everyone, because all people are created equal and worthy of a helping hand when needed.
To honor Dr. King's legacy, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Day of Service in 1994 to empower individuals and communities to build toward a brighter future with the only federal holiday that is observed as a national day of service.
Today, people across America will come together to celebrate Dr. King's life and contribution to our nation by serving their communities at soup kitchens, schools, community gardens, churches, and more during this important tradition of 'a day on.” I encourage you to find a way to get involved, either through local service opportunities or creating your own events. To find a service opportunity near you, please visit www.nationalservice.gov/mlkday and enter your Zip code. I will be participating in events in Iowa City and Davenport and I hope to see you out there!
