Evelyn Esther Lorei, 84, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 16, 2018, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. A parish vigil service followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary will begin at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. The family will greet friends following the rosary from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, conducted by Father David O'Connor. The family also will greet friends one hour prior to the Mass on Wednesday at the church. Burial will follow Mass at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Evelyn was born Oct. 21, 1933, in Erie, Pa., the daughter of Michael and Valeria (Kalicka) Lukasiewicz. On May 11, 1957, at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Erie, she was united in marriage to John Albert Lorei. Evelyn received her nursing degree from St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing and was employed as a registered nurse with St. Vincent Hospital, and later served for 15 years at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. She was an outstanding and talented vocalist. Evelyn was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and sang in the choir for 56 years. She also was a member of the Marion Musical Literary Club and the Concert Chorale, where she had the lead in "The Messiah." Evelyn was an excellent cook and would never let you go hungry in her home. She was a loving, caring and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. Evelyn will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of 61 years, John A. Lorei of Marion; six children, Deborah A. (Rhett) Spivey of Hitchcock, Texas, John M. Lorei of Kansas City, Kan., Michelle A. (Larry) Anthis of San Antonio, Texas, Lisa L. (Tim) Lanai of Franklin, Tenn., Gregory S. (Kim) Lorei of Trophy Club, Texas and Cynthia M. Tindal of Williamsburg, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; and a sister, Dolores Vollmer of Erie, Pa.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.
Memorials in Evelyn's memory may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion or the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha.
