IOWA CITY -- Girls' sprinters, boys' sprinters.
Girls' title. Boys' title.
Led by McKennan Cronbaugh and Armondo Williams, Iowa City West rode its sprinting speed to twin wins at the Hollingsworth Relays and Women of Troy Relays on Tuesday night at Trojan Field.
"My coaches keep telling me, 'Stay relaxed, stay relaxed,' said Williams, who swept the 100- and 200-meter races and anchored the Trojans' 400-meter relay to a title. "They say the guys in front of me are going to tighten up."
West's boys won their second title in five days. After edging Linn-Mar by two points on Friday, they prevailed in more comfortable fashion Tuesday.
The Trojans accumulated 132 points. Linn-Mar was second with 106, followed by Ottumwa (72 1/2).
West outscored Burlington, 160 1/2-114, for a convincing girls' title. The Women of Troy won nine events, breaking meet records in the 800-meter relay (1:44.24) and 400-meter relay (49.62).
Sophomore McKennan Cronbaugh was on both of those relays and captured the 100 and long jump, making it a quadruple-title kind of day.
"Coach (Mike) Parker told me right after the 100 that I'd be running in the 4-by-2," Cronbaugh said. "When you run two events close to each other like that, you have to focus in, keep your head up and make a good exchange."
Cronbaugh and Shahana Williams are the veteran standouts now for the West sprinting corps, succeeding the graduated Jessica Gehrke.
"We're taking on new leadership roles," Cronbaugh said. "It's up to us to lead the freshmen like Jessica led us."
Williams edged teammate Charles Rogers in the 100, then nudged Waterloo East's Aaron Taylor in the 200. Both were timed in 22.93 seconds.
Linn-Mar won six boys' events, sparked by Kyle Dunn's meet-record 52.67-second effort in the 400 hurdles. He anchored the Lions from fifth to first in the 1,600 relay.
Carolyn Newhouse of Linn-Mar swept the girls' distance events, running the 3,000 in 10:44.99 and the 1,500 in 5:03.70.
"The 3,000 was about 20 seconds off my (personal best), but I'm pretty happy with my 1,500," Newhouse said.
Kyle Stocker's 2-flat third leg gave Cedar Rapids Prairie the lead for good in the boys' 3,200 relay, and the Hawks won it going away in 8:09.36.
"It was nothing special," Stocker said. "I just ran hard."
Burlington's Khanishah Williams set three girls' records -- the high jump (5-8), the 100-meter hurdles (15.29) and anchoring the Grayhounds' shuttle hurdle relay team in 1:07.72.
