GUY LOURIE ROSENBERG
Iowa City
Guy Lourie Rosenberg, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away in Omaha, Neb., on Nov. 19, 2015. Guy was born April 3, 1935, in Moline, Ill. The son of Guy Fay Rosenberg and Mabel Hilda (Anderson), he graduated from Moline High School and earned his A.A. from Black Hawk Community College in 1955 before graduating from Western Illinois University with a B.S. in education in 1957. Guy was the first member of his family to graduate from college and continued on to earn an M.S. in education (Western Illinois, 1960) and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology (University of Iowa, 1969). He met Sharon Kay Miller of Galva, Ill., while at Western Illinois and they were married on Aug. 24, 1958.
During his early professional life, Guy was an elementary teacher in Sterling, Ill. (1957-58), a school counselor in the Park Forest, Ill., school district (1959-60), an instructor in guidance and counseling and head resident adviser at Western Illinois University (1960-62), and a placement counselor at the University of Iowa (1965-66). He then moved on to Peru State College in Peru, Neb., where he served as an associate professor of psychology (1966-71), dean of students and vice president of student affairs (1971-73), director of student life (1973-76), and director of career counseling and placement (1976-77). In 1977, Guy moved from Nebraska to Iowa City, to work as senior test editor for mental abilities tests at Houghton Mifflin Company, spearheading a 1985 revision of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test. He finished out his professional career at American Testronics in 1985. After retirement, Guy was a successful independent investor. He married Martha Craft on Oct. 24, 1993, and they enjoyed 22 years of wonderful marriage before Guy's passing.
Guy enjoyed a lifelong fascination with history and world news and had an extensive presidential memorabilia collection. He and Marty enjoyed traveling and saw the world via the Orient Express, the Concorde, and the Queen Elizabeth 2. Guy also had an appreciation for fine cars. He was an avid toy train collector and passed his love of Marx, American Flyer and Lionel trains on to his grandchildren.
Guy believed in promoting the best in people and supported organizations that shared this mission. He was a fundraising leader for the First United Methodist Church of North Liberty capital improvement drive. The drive led to the construction of a new church building. He was also a member of the University of Iowa President's Club and donated regularly to the Shelter House of Iowa City as well as both the North Liberty Community Pantry and the Coralville Ecumenical Food Pantry.
Even though Guy's adult life included multiple surgeries and disability resulting from a car accident as a young man, it did not show. His intelligence, hard work and attention to detail contributed to success in his professional and personal lives. Guy enjoyed life. He was a sharp dresser, a good conversationalist and a gracious host. Some of the favorite joys in life for Guy were lively discussions with friends over coffee and being with his family. His ability to connect with people, his openness and his positive outlook contributed to the love for Guy held by family members and long-term friends. From remodeling and redecorating to beginning a new friendship, Guy consistently believed in moving forward to make a situation better. His family members are grateful for the time enjoyed with Guy during his lifetime and will carry on with his belief.
Guy was preceded in death by his parents, Guy Fay and Mabel Hilda; a brother, Louis; sister, Bonnie; and his late wife, Sharon Kay, who died Aug. 20, 1990.
He is survived by his wife, Martha (Marty) Craft -Rosenberg; and his three sons, Guy John Rosenberg (wife Reagan Rosenberg), Gary Rosenberg (wife Anna Rosenberg) and stepson John (Jack) Craft (wife Amy Craft). He is also survived by these five grandchildren, Zane, Lexie, Ty and Jaxon Rosenberg and Alex John (AJ) Craft; as well as several nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, at North Liberty First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alecia Williams officiating. The family will greet friends after 4 p.m. Wednesday at the church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to North Liberty Community Pantry (northlibertycommunity
pantry.org) or the Coralville Ecumenical Food Pantry (cefoodpantry.org).
Rest in Peace, our beloved Guy.
