Sherman, G. Mary
G. Mary Sherman, 91, of Walker, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point. Family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the funeral home. Burial: Walker Cemetery, Walker.
Survivors include her children, Judy (Gerald) Wall of Center Point, Tom (Loretta) Sherman of Hiawatha and Chuck Sherman of Walker; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Pearl Kaufman and Liz Kaufman, both of Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray; siblings, George, Tom and Claire Kaufman and Lavonne Turner-Hurst; and daughters-in-law, Kathryn and Sally Sherman.
Mary was born July 12, 1921, the daughter of Thomas and Irene (Steele) Kaufman, in Redfield, S.D. She attended school in Redfield and moved to Center Point when she was in the 7th grade. On Sept. 7, 1938, Mary was united in marriage to Ray Sherman in Toddville, Iowa. While raising her family, she helped run Sherman's Hardware Plumbing and Heating. Ray died Sept. 5, 1969, in a car accident. Mary worked at the Center Point Nursing Home, St. Luke's Hospital in the radiology department and then was an assistant for her son, Tom's chiropractic business and later her granddaughter, Sharla Wall's chiropractic business in Independence.
Mary enjoyed bowling, which she did into her 70s, fishing and watching Iowa Hawkeye and Green Bay Packer football. But most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and her dog, Tiny.
