Moran, Peggy
Peggy Moran of Torquay, Australia, formerly of Cascade, died March 26,2011, after a short illness. She was born March 19, 1937, the daughter of Eldred Moran and Margaret Knepper Moran.
Peg is survived by her partner, Monica Hingston; and her brothers, Tom, Terry and his wife, Joyce of Cedar Rapids, and her brother, Ken and his wife Charlene of Scottsdale, Ariz.
Also surviving are four nieces and nephews, their spouses and five great-nieces and nephews.
Peg joined the Sisters of St. Francis, Dubuque, in 1955, following her graduation from St. Mary's High School, Cascade. While with the Franciscans, she completed her BA degree at Briar Cliff College, Sioux City, taught in Iowa schools and in 1965 went to Chile to teach. Her mission there soon turned to working with the poor of Santiago. Among her many humanitarian projects, she was instrumental in creating a literacy program for impoverished women. Her commitment to improving the lives of poor women was lifelong.
In 1992, after 27 years in Chile and no longer a Franciscan, Peg moved to Australia. There she attained dual citizenship and worked as a social worker until her retirement.
Peg's joy for living was contagious and she enjoyed all things humorous. Peg loved Monica, family and friends throughout the world and they will treasure her forever.
Funeral services were held in Australia April 4. Private family services will be held in Iowa at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4080 First Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402,
