MARVIN "MARV" RICHARD ELSON
Cedar Rapids
Marvin "Marv" Richard Elson, 80, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully after
a sudden illness at St. Luke's Hospital on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017, surrounded by his family. His soul entered Heaven to enjoy the eternal life won for him through the death and resurrection of his Savior Jesus Christ. Visitation: 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Funeral services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Zion Lutheran Church, Hiawatha, officiated by the Rev. Daniel L. Krueger. Family will greet friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. before the church service. Burial: Shiloh Cemetery, Hiawatha.
Marv was born Sept. 3, 1937, to Floyd and Elva (Booze) Elson. He married Norma Jeanne Railsback on July 25, 1959, in Shellsburg, Iowa, at the Lutheran Church. Marv was a hard worker. At 16 years old, Marv's first job was for the railroad. Next, he moved to Peter Pan Bakery. Marv then worked for Iowa Manufacturing as a machine burner. Following a layoff, he worked at both Downey Box and National Oats. Marv began working for Rockwell Collins when it was still Collins Radio in the 1960s. He was a machinist in the model shop and worked closely with engineers. Marv also worked on machine parts for NASA, handling key components for our first trip to the moon! At 55 years old, he retired after 33 years with Rockwell. Marv always loved semis, and went on to acquire his Class A CDL from Kirkwood. He drove semis for Dale Peterson of Evergreen Landscape Supply Co., a very close friend of 20 years. Marv retired on Oct. 29, 2015.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Missouri Synod and IBEW 1362. Marv and his wife, Norma, loved riding horses together. Marv's horse, Flash, was his favorite riding companion for many years. After their horse riding years ended, Marv and Norma enjoyed driving semis together for Evergreen Landscaping.
Marv is survived by his wife, Norma Jeanne Elson of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Kathy (Corey) Elson-Baker of Cedar Rapids; son, Ricky Elson of Springville; five grandchildren, Jessica, Arron, Ezekiel, Keaton and Simon; two great-grandchildren; sister, Bonnie Murphy; and niece, Sue Wesely.
He will be greatly missed and was greatly loved by all.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church.
