Letter: Consider our Christian heritage

The article on Christianity in our government ('Conservative Christians ponder presidential race,” June 20) is long overdue. Let us hope that it brings about much discussion.

Perhaps one of the subjects to begin with would be the Supreme Court decision in which the court decided that our Constitution requires a separation of church and state. It appears that we have no dissenters when we say that 'One nation under God” was approved to be in our Pledge of Allegiance following a decision of the same Supreme Court.

It has been my understanding that all of the states in the Confederacy required that only Christians could serve in their state legislatures. If that is true, I would think that all of the people who attended the conference that created the United States of America were also Christians.

The U.S. Constitution provides for the court of law and equity. Does the court of equity have a religious background? It is my understanding that a court of equity will not enter a judgment that is unconscionable nor one that will bring about an unconscionable result.

Members of Congress have the authority to submit questions to the Congressional Research Bureau. This agency can examine the historical beginnings of these actions. We owe it to future generations to find out if mistakes have been made. Let us encourage members of Congress to submit our questions to the Congressional Research Bureau to get the full legislative history.
