WASHINGTON, Iowa — Alex Coker and the Washington Demons proved they are ready for the big time last night, defeating Williamsburg, 35-10, in a battle of Class 3A District 7 standouts.
The teams entered with 4-1 records, and now Washington sits in the driver's seat for the district title.
Coker had 247 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns. He went 65 yards on his second carry and followed that with a 69-yard score on a second-quarter option and another 25-yard run before the half ended.
The Demons led 21-10 at halftime.
'This is all about the linemen tonight,' Coker said. 'I give them all the credit. Because they do their job (and) it allows me to make plays and score. This is about this team and this coaching staff.'
The Demons added two second-half scores by Tanner Knupp.
'We started out getting some points right out of the chute,' Washington Coach Randy Schrader said.
'That gave us an early advantage when we needed it.'
Washington held the Raiders to less than 150 yards of offense. Quarterback Jacob Donohoe was held to 8 of 25 for 63 yards.
