Orioles defend, then hold on

Jan. 11, 2014 12:00 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS -- A couple young boys sat behind the Springville bench. They chanted for "DEE-FENSE."
And for a long, pivotal stretch, they got it.
The Orioles held Lisbon without a field goal for about 10 1/2 minutes, then held off a late charge to win Saturday's Tri-Rivers Conference West Division girls basketball game, 41-35, as part of Rivalry Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center."
After the first quarter, we adjusted to their spacing," said Orioles Coach Nate Sanderson. "Once we shifted, we forced them to make outside shots."
A 3-pointer by Emily Light at the first-quarter horn gave Lisbon (3-8 overall, 2-4 TRC West) the lead at 11-9. But Springville (6-5, 3-3) held the Lions without a basket until the 5:21 mark of the third quarter. By then, the Orioles had built a double-digit lead..
The margin grew as large as 29-15 before the Lions gathered themselves and made a charge.
It was 32-24 at the end of the third quarter, then Lisbon got within 37-32 on Danielle Heiken's basket with 3:15 remaining.
That set the stage for the biggest shot of the game, a 3-pointer by Springville's Sarah Matus at the 2:48 mark that stemmed the tide.
"She's not afraid of the moment," Sanderson said. "She's not very big, but she's got a quick release. She's a big-moment player."
Springville's Maddie Wittenburg led all scorers with 10 points. Matus added nine, all from long range.
Danielle Heiken scored eight for Lisbon.
