Cedar Valley Christian suspending football program for 2 years

May. 19, 2016 9:22 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - Cedar Valley Christian football is regrouping.
Principal Jeff Pospisil said Thursday the little private school on the southeast side of Cedar Rapids is suspending its Eight-Man varsity program for two years because of a low number of participants.
'We didn't have enough to make it safe for the boys,” Pospisil said. 'We have a small freshman class coming in with no boys, a very girl-dominated class. We graduated some seniors and had some others who were not interested in playing.”
CVC began playing football in 2011, the same year it became a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union. It does not have a field, so it played its games at LaSalle Middle School.
The Huskies had a 2-37 overall record, beating Harmony in 2014 (30-20) and 2015 (65-6) for its only wins.
Harmony will cease being a high school at the end of this school season, entering a whole-grade sharing agreement with Van Buren.
Cedar Valley Christian was to open its season August 26 at home against West Central. Now its nine opponents will have open dates on their schedules.
District 4 will consist of seven schools instead of eight: Easton Valley, English Valleys, Iowa Valley, Lone Tree, Midland, Springville and WACO.
'Rather than risk it, risk the safety of the boys, we've decided to shut it down for two years,” Pospisil said. 'Hopefully we can rebuild the program after that.”
