Indee, West Delaware reach only tie in Wamac tournament history

INDEPENDENCE – The Wamac Conference wrestling tournament has a long history.

Fifty-five years of wrestling tournaments were held before last night's in Independence, but none were as close as the 56th edition of the meet.

For the first time in conference tournament history, the meet ended with co-champions, as Independence and West Delaware each ended with 218.5 points.

'I'd been telling the kids all week (that) this tournament was going to come down to one takedown somewhere in the tournament,' said West Delaware Coach Jeff Voss. 'For both teams, that's probably what happened. It played out about like we thought (it would).'

Throughout much of the tournament's history, it was the Mustangs (27-4) and the Hawks (16-7) fighting for the title. Including this year, Indee (three, plus one shared) and West Delaware (five, plus one shared) have combined to win nine of the last 10 conference tournaments, and combine for half of all-time tournaments won (West Delaware 19.5, Indee 7.5).

The two teams were never far apart all regular season either, with the Hawks ranked No. 5 in both the dual and tournament team rankings, and the Mustangs as the No. 10 team on both lists.

'This Wamac conference is a great conference. You can tell by (all) the team scores, it's pretty competitive,' said Indee Coach Michael Doyle. 'I don't know many Wamac tournaments have come down to us (and West Delaware). If they're first, we're second. If we're first, they're second. And we live close together, so obviously it's competitive.'

The highlight for Indee on Saturday was the second straight conference title for team leader Kyle Fank, who said earlier this week he had hoped to one-up his older brother Ryan by capturing that second crown.

Fank pinned his way through the tournament, including the title match, where he pinned Williamsburg's Mitch Spenler in 3:41 at 182 pounds. Doyle said Fank has been the Mustangs' leader all season, with his 41-1 record and No. 3 ranking at 182 clear evidence of that.

'He's kind of the engine of our team, and it's great for him to do that (win the conference title),' Doyle said. 'He has a lot of goals this year. It's great to see him get two conference titles to kind of up his brother a little bit. The focus for him now will be towards the state tournament and doing well there.'

The younger Fank gave a wide smile when asked about his second Wamac triumph, and said Ryan was in attendance to cheer him on, and told Kyle how proud he was when the match was over.

But as sweet as the individual victory might have been for Kyle, the team result was equally as bittersweet. He said he was happy to have a share of the title, but wanted it all for Indee, which beat West Delaware in their dual meet on Thuresday, 38-28.

'It hurts a little bit. I wanted that team title (just for Indee),' Fank said. 'I was hoping we could get them in the team tournament race. We still got first, in a tie, but that's not how I wanted it.'

No matter the final score, the respect between the two programs is clear. Both Voss and Doyle spoke in superlatives about the other, crediting them with the depth and talent of their respective programs.

Indee and West Delaware each ended the tournament with three individual champions – Sam Phillips at 126, Jake Voss at 160 and Brent Lammers at 170 for the Hawks, and Chase Straw at 145, Fank at 182 and Matt McMillan at 195 for the Mustangs – and Voss said he wasn't surprised at all by the tie.

Based on how the rivalry has played out in 2013-14, there really was no other outcome to be had.

'The way Independence and us have battled all year, it's probably fitting it ended this way,' Voss said with a laugh. 'It came down to the final match, and that's kind of the way our matches have gone all year. So it's probably fitting.'
