Lisbon survived a late game scare and rallied for a 31-20 Class A first-round prep football playoff victory Friday night in Winthrop.
The Buccaneers (7-3) were clinging to a slim, 20-19, edge with three minutes remaining in the game, but the Lions were driving and had a third-and-nine at the Bucs 27 yard line.
Needing to score, Lions quarterback Jake Jennett sent a line drive pass down the middle that went in and out of the hands of a Bucs defender, which would have sealed the win.
Instead, Jennett used his extra chance to convert a fourth down pass to Blake Langhurst, connecting on the 27-yard scoring play to go up 25-20.
The Lions converted a Buccaneer fumble on their next series into six points for the final score.
'We did not give up and we just wanted to keep going at them,' Lions Coach Darin Hofmeister said. 'We knew this would be a battle up front and it was. Our guys stayed with it and came away with the win.'
The Bucs grabbed a 20-6 lead early in the second half when they recovered a muffed attempt by the Lions to retrieve a short kick.
Buccaneers quarterback Spencer Cook hit Tyler Williams three plays later from 19 yards out for the two-touchdown lead.
'When they recovered that kickoff, it was just like the last time we played them,' Hofmeister said. 'We had a lead and they recovered the second half kick and went on to win (44-20).
'Our guys stuck with it and overcame it.'
