A week after being shutout in their season opener, concerns about the Waterloo Black Hawks offense were allayed after a 5-3 win against the Lincoln Stars at Young Arena Saturday.
The Hawks pulled ahead 4-0 by the early second period. Vince Hinostroza and Aaron Pearce scored less than a minute apart near the midpoint of the opening frame. Max Edson added a goal prior to intermission, before Jacob MacDonald pushed the margin to its widest, 1:20 into the second, with Waterloo's only power play goal.
Sam Alfieri and Ryan Dzingel started a Stars rally shortly after MacDonald's goal, but Luke Hannon pushed the margin back to three goals with a score at 12:00 of the second period. Lincoln's Dominik Shine scored the only goal in the third to pull the Stars within two goals at 3:28, but the Stars couldn't come any closer.
The Hawks host an exhibition Sunday against a squad of select Chinese junior players Sunday at 4PM. The next Waterloo home game in USHL play is Saturday, October 16th against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
