West blasts City High, 78-27

IOWA CITY - Iowa City West's 1-3-1 zone led to steals. Steals turned into layups.

And a competitive game quickly turned into a rout.

Top-ranked West blasted Iowa City High in the middle two quarters and rolled to a 78-27 Mississippi Valley Conference boys' basketball victory Tuesday night at West High School.

'They battled us for a quarter, they made some tough shots,” West Coach Steve Bergman said. 'That 1-3-1 is a good defense for us. It can turn people over a little, and we're pretty good in transition.”

West (4-0 overall, 2-0 MVC) held a modest 20-16 lead at the first quarter break. But the Trojans scored the first 17 points of the second quarter, in about a four-minute span. Patrick McCaffery had four baskets in that stretch, including a pair of dunks.

It was 46-18 at halftime, 69-25 after three quarters.

Connor McCaffery led the Trojans with 17 points. Patrick McCaffery added 15, and Devontae Lane and Seybian Sims tacked on 14 apiece.

City High (0-5, 0-2) hung around for a while, trailing just 12-11 late in the first quarter.

'We weren't perfect on defense early in the game, but we never are,” Bergman said.

Ry Threlkeld-Wiegand paced the Little Hawks with eight points.
