DeCook, Steven A.
Steven A. DeCook, 57, of 3155 Meadow Glen St., Marion, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, in the home of his daughter in Thornton, Colo., after a brave six-year battle with one of the rarest and most aggressive forms of cancer, angio sarcoma. Services: 2 p.m. Friday at New Covenant Bible Church, Cedar Rapids, where friends may call from noon until service time on Friday. The Rev. James Wartian will officiate. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
Survivors include his wife, Dawn; daughter, Brionna (Ben) Orozco of Thornton, Colo.; son, Ryan (Amy) of Richfield, Minn.; his parents, Arthur and Evelyn DeCook of Pella; two sisters, Barb (Dennis) Lester of Colfax and Cheryl (Will) Morgan of Atherton, Calif.; one brother, Larry of Pella; and a granddaughter, Enslea Grace.
Steve was born Dec. 14, 1953, in Des Moines, the son of Arthur and Evelyn (DePenning) DeCook. He married Dawn M. Marvin on June 24, 1978, in Cedar Rapids. He was a talented designer at Schneider Electric and was well respected by his co-workers. He was a hard worker, always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to friends and family in need even when he himself was suffering. He was a Cadet leader for many years at Peace Christian Reformed Church, mentoring boys to become men of faith. He was actively involved in Bible studies and ministry at New Covenant Bible Church.
Steve was a wonderful, devoted and loving husband and father. He always put family first. Granddaughter, Enslea Grace was the joy of his life. A friend recently mentioned that Colorado is Steve and Dawn's heaven on earth. That is because their favorite little angel lives there. He was a talented wood worker and flower gardener/landscaper. He enjoyed photography and spending time in the mountains of Colorado. He amazed everyone with his ability to repair or build anything. Steve was always involved in his kids' activities and never missed a music concert or sporting event, often coaching the kids sports teams when they were young.
He is a hero and inspiration to all who knew him.
