Cook, Harlan Wayne
Harlan Wayne Cook, 70, of Strawberry Point, passed away in his sleep on Dec. 21, 2010, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. He had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and a long term battle with emphysema. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, at the Roberson Funeral Home in Strawberry Point, with a memorial remembrance at 3 p.m.
Harlan “Doc” was born Oct. 12, 1940, to Harlan Lafayette and Norma Cook. He grew up in Troy Mills, where his parents ran the local grocery store for many years. Doc graduated from Troy Mills High School in 1957. He then went on to Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, where he earned his doctorate of chiropractic in 1965. He practiced in the Cedar Rapids area until he moved to Strawberry Point in 1969 and brought chiropractic care to the area. In 1971, he moved onto his acreage north of Strawberry Point, where he lived until shortly before his death.
Doc was passionate about horses, hunting and the Hawkeyes. Doc was the first to introduce horseback square dancing to Northeast Iowa and he was the leader of his local deer hunting group for over 30 years. Doc was a volunteer fireman, an EMT, a Mason and a part-time farmer.
Doc is survived by his two sisters, Deanna Ireland and Laura Mae Enabnit, both of Solon. He is also survived by his five children, Tammy Heitt of Cedar Rapids, Teresa (T) Cook of New Richmond, Wis., Shon Anne Cook of Twin Lake, Mich., and Reid and Matt Cook, both of Lamont. Doc is also survived by five grandchildren, Sophia, Elizabeth and Sam Stevens of Twin Lake, Mich., Nicholas Hubacek of Cedar Rapids and Gregory Hubacek of Philadelphia, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
