ARTHUR JOHN (JACK) ARENDS
Sacramento, Calif.
Jack was born in Manchester, Iowa, on July 6, 1961, the son of Dr. Mary and Arthur Arends. Upon graduation from West Delaware High School, Jack went on to study at the University of Notre Dame. He spent his sophomore year of college studying abroad in Tokyo, Japan. After his college graduation in 1984, Jack returned to Japan and lived there until June of this year. Jack worked as a successful medical device salesman during his years in Japan and eventually, became country manager for Japan for Zoll Medical out of Boston. He had an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age and also formed multiple companies during his career.
Jack was an enthusiast and had varied and diverse interests and a lifetime love of learning. He enjoyed the outdoors and frequently returned to Manchester to visit family and friends and to enjoy his favorite pastime of fishing and spending time in the outdoors around Delaware County. His spirit was pure and he often defended the vulnerable. Jack especially loved using his intellect to debate and to make others laugh. Above all, he loved his children deeply and wholeheartedly and treasured his time with family and friends in both the U.S. and Japan.
Jack is survived by his wife, Sayuri Arends; children, AJ, Hyatt, Hana and stepdaughter Ayumi; sisters, Viv Arends, Jeni Thomas (Mike), Susi Gordon (Paul) and Teresa Cox (Pat); mother, Dr. Mary Arends Lorenz; and many nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by his father, Art J. Arends Jr.
A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, Dec. 3, 2018, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manchester, immediately followed by a luncheon at St. Mary's Parish Center.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Manchester, Iowa, following the luncheon.
Visitation will be on Sunday, Dec. 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Parish Center at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manchester with a Scripture service beginning at 5 p.m. There will also be a short time before the funeral Mass for a brief visitation in the back of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manchester, Iowa.
