URBANDALE - The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders played a game Friday night that went extra time. Which obviously means it was a victory.
Hugh McGing scored as the seventh shooter, and goalie Ben Blacker made the corresponding save as the Riders beat Des Moines, 4-3, in a shootout Friday night.
Cedar Rapids (30-14-0, 60 points) is 7-0 in games that have not ended in regulation this USHL season. That includes 4-0 in shootouts.
Adam Gaudette's goal with 1:11 left and Blacker off for an extra attacker sent this game to overtime. In the shootout, leadoff man Charlie Curti converted successfully, but Des Moines tied it when third-shooter Tanner Karty scored.
Fourth-shooter Cal Burke then scored for C.R., only to have Des Moines respond. Blacker made 31 stops, shootout excluded, to pick up the win.
Andrew Gaus and Derek Daschke scored goals to give the RoughRiders a 2-1 lead after a period. Des Moines tied it with a goal in the second period, then went ahead on a Karty goal at the 8:17 mark.
Cedar Rapids hosts Sioux City on Saturday night at approximately 7:15 in a matchup of the league leaders in standings points.
