Four prep baseball teams were crowned state championso the final day of the 2016-17 high school sports year at Principal Park in Des Moines.
Brackets: How we got here
Class 1A: No. 1 Mason City Newman 8, No. 2 Martensdale-St. Marys 3
Newman used a seven-run fourth inning to overcome a 3-0 deficit and win its second title in three years.
Evan Paulus and Josh Thilges each had RBI doubles in the inning, with Thilges driving in two. Ben Fitzgerald added an RBI single, Josh Fitzgerald a sac fly.
Paulus went seven innings for the win, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out five.
Class 2A: No. 1 Dyersville Beckman 9, No. 7 Carroll Kuemper 6
The Blazers took advantage of early walks and errors, batting around in the first inning before recording their first hit.
Beckman scored all nine of its runs in the first inning, getting two-run hits from Riley LeGrand and Joel Vaske, who each finished with two hits.
Kuemper rallied within three with a five-run sixth, but Beckman held on, then celebrated with longtime coach Tom Jenk Jr., who made the trip to Principal Park despite dealing with brain cancer.
Class 3A: No. 1 Davenport Asssumption 10, No. 2 Harlan 1
The Knights continued their dominance with a 10th state title, unmatched in Iowa, knocking off the defending 3A champs to do it.
Assumption, which never lost to a 3A school this year, scored in all six at-bats and rode the dominance of starter Trenton Wallace.
Wallace struck out 13 Cyclones while giving up just three hits, three walks and an unearned run. Nolan Melchert was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs.
Class 4A: No. 1 Johnston 5, No. 2 West Des Moines Dowling 0
