She steps onto the court, racket in hand, and knows she can take this game.
Madison Wilson, a junior, has been on the tennis team at Marion High School for three years. She's ready to make her mark this year.
Wilson joined the tennis team her freshman year just for a fun sport to do in the spring.
'I didn't realize how much I would enjoy tennis,” she said. 'I had never played before, but I am so glad I made the decision to join.”
Wilson immediately showed potential to be a great tennis player and her coach moved her up onto the varsity team.
'It was an amazing feeling when I got put on varsity tennis as a freshman,” Wilson said.
By the time Wilson was a sophomore, she was bumped up to the second spot out of six on varsity, with only one senior ahead of her.
This tennis season, Wilson has high hopes of making the No. 1 spot on varsity.
'I've worked really hard in the off-season for this, so hopefully I can achieve my goal,” Wilson said.
Shannon Sellers, also a junior, has been Wilson's doubles partner since their freshman year. Sellers played on the varsity team a little that season and all of last year and hopes she will play varsity again this year.
'I joined tennis because I wanted to try something new and be involved.” Sellers said. 'I didn't know I would end up liking it as much as I do now, but it was definitely a good decision.”
Wilson and Sellers want to continue as doubles partners.
'We have a lot of fun playing together and it's way less nerve-wracking going into a match knowing I'm not all alone,” Sellers said.
Sellers and Wilson joined tennis as a fun thing to do and ended up falling in love with this sport. This can happen to anyone - and anybody who has interest in an activity should try it out.
