Sorry, Hawkeye fans, but forget about Marcus Jordan
Mike Hlas Mar. 31, 2009 3:26 pm
The Hlog's good friends at HawkeyeReport.com are reporting that Marcus Jordan isn't interested in making the University of Iowa his college home.
HawkeyeReport says young Jordan doesn't want to play in the same conference as his brother Jeffrey (who is at Illinois). The Hlog wishes it weren't so, because having Michael Jordan as a Hawkeye fan would make for interesting copy.
Tuesday, I called Marcus' coach at Whitney Young High School in Chicago, Tyrone Slaughter. That was before I knew Marcus was ruling out Iowa, but also to ask him about Chris Colvin, the Whitney Young point guard headed to Iowa State later this year.
Slaughter talked freely and proudly about Colvin, who quarterbacked the Whitney Young team that had at least five future Division I players.
"He's a phenomenal kid," Slaughter said. "He's a young man who played with our varsity for four years and was a starter the last two. He was probably our most valuable player through the course of this season. So much of what we were able to do was a result of what he was able to do, getting the basketball and creating, and making shots available to other people.
"He'll bring the point guard they so desperately need. He's a kid who, when Iowa State looks back after he's done, they'll say 'Man, we were extremely fortunate to have a player of his stature.' "
OK, that's a high school coach bragging on one of his own, so take it with a pinch of salt. However, the state-championship speaks for itself.
Chris Colvin, Cyclone-to-be
