Peter A. Greiner, 83, of Wahpeton, formerly of Lisbon, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, at Lakes Regional Health Care Center, Spirit Lake. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mechanicsville, with
burial to follow in Lisbon Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church, where there will be a
7 p.m. parish vigil.
Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is handling Pete's arrangements.
Peter was born in March 1932 in Keota, the son of Peter L. and Grace (Carmichael) Greiner. He graduated from Lisbon High School in 1950 and then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
Pete was united in marriage to Margo McCaffery on Aug. 24, 1963, in Wheaton, Ill. Pete farmed nearly his whole life in the Lisbon area with members of his family, including his nephew, Scott Wendler. He enjoyed his town and was happy to volunteer when asked; woodworking, stained glass, traveling, gardening and most of all, the time spent with his family.
Pete was a member of Lisbon American Legion Post 109, Optimists Club, Mount Vernon VFW, board member of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, served as council member and mayor of Lisbon, Mount Vernon/ Lisbon Ambulance board, Knights of Columbus, and was on the planning committee for Lisbon School Million Dollar Challenge.
Pete is survived by his wife, Margo; children, Peter E. "Rick" (Raynel) of Lisbon, Michael (Leann) of Milford and Troy (Michelle) of Spirit Lake; six grandchildren, Jessica, Peter J., Elizabeth, Sean, Ryan and David; one great-grandson, Treyton; siblings, Jane Carney of Coggon, Perry Greiner of San Jose, Calif., Martha Fitzgerald of Omaha, Neb., Myra Kashen of Oshkosh, Wis.; and Gloria Schnippel of Indianapolis; as well as his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents and siblings, JoAnn Arcand, Rita Wendler and Colleen Hawkins.
Memorials may be directed to either Lakes Regional Medical Center Hospice and National Kidney Foundation.
