Thomas F. Hoffman died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, surrounded by his family in his home. Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Phil Thompson will officiate at the service. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, with a Scripture service starting at 4 p.m. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Thomas F. Hoffman was born Feb. 18, 1932, son of John V. and Treasa (Machovec) Hoffman. He married Phyllis (Upah) Hoffman on Oct. 13, 1956.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years; four daughters, Kathy (Dave) Hausmann, Lorri (Phillip) Putnam, Judy (Bill) Dill and Molly (Steve) Koehn; six grandchildren, Melissa (Matt) Abendroth, Christina Mitchell, Carly Putnam, Corey Koehn, Darcy Koehn and Nick Hausmann; a great-grandson, Rain Richards, and another due in April; three stepgranddaughters, Crystal (Jim) Kraayen-brink, Alicia Dill and Chelsea Dill; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Chloe and Carter Kraayenbrink; a sister-in-law, Patti Hoffman; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, John, Jim, Bill and Don; and sister, Barbara Svoboda.
Tom graduated from St. Patrick's High School in Cedar Rapids. He served in the U.S. Navy for three years, nine months and 27 days. He worked at Unisys (Burroughs) for 32 years and retired in 1988. Later he worked at Rockwell Collins as a contract employee.
He was a member of the VFW and Knights of Columbus.
Tom loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling and family camping trips all over the United States. He was an avid gardener who could grow more in a square foot than most farmers. After he retired he enjoyed spending the winters in Texas. His most recent trip was to Washington, D.C., on the Honor Flight.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Hospice of Mercy, especially Beth.
