Bahning, Joan S.
Joan S. Bahning, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, at All Saints Catholic Church with the Rev. Jack Flaherty officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will take place at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Dyersville at 3 p.m. Friday. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Surviving are her husband of 62 years, John L. Bahning; her children, Mary Wille and husband David of Vadnais Heights, Minn., Tom Bahning and wife Victoria Duggan of Santa Rosa, Calif. and Barbara Chin and husband Richard of Seattle, Wash.; and her grandchildren, Christina, Diana, Charles, Claudia and Oliver.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her infant daughters, Ann and Elizabeth.
Joan was born on March 18, 1924, in Dubuque, the daughter of Anton and Frances (Klosterman) Schermer. She was united in marriage to John L. Bahning on April 10, 1950, in Dyersville. She cared for her family in her home and spent time camping with her family throughout the U.S. She enjoyed playing bridge, growing flowers, gardening, cooking and sewing. In later years, she and John enjoyed traveling throughout the world. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church where she served as a Martha. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who cherished her family. She will be greatly missed.
