Nathan "Nate" Alden, 89, formerly of Prairieburg, passed away peacefully Monday, May 23, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Funeral: 10 a.m. Thursday, May 26, at the funeral home conducted by the Rev. Larry Daubs. Burial: Prairieburg Boulder Cemetery.
Nathan is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty; his children, Dan (Joanne) Alden of Center Point, Melonie (Wayne) Buelow of Center Point, Marty (Joan) Alden of Princeton, Ind., and Belinda (Jerry) Linderman of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Sara (Frank) Wilkins, Stephanie (Todd) Kress, Matt (Sara) Alden, Jeremy (Vickie) Buelow, Ranae (Chris) McGovern, Michelle (Scott) Kopf, Jennifer Buelow, Serena Buelow, Hannah (Bradley) Garrett, Asher (Brittany) Alden, Thad (Elizabeth) Alden, Abigail Alden, Nick (Abigail) Ritze, Luke (Sabrina) Ritze, Brooke (Chris) Gardner and Felan (Matt) Link; 37 great-grandchildren and one on the way; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Martin (Joan) Alden of Sarasota, Fla.; and sisters-in-law, Sharon (Robert) Foley of Austin, Texas, and Lois Sweeting of Center Point.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Stanley Alden.
Nathan was born Oct. 15, 1926, in Shellsburg, Iowa. He graduated from Shellsburg High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. On July 24, 1950, he married Betty Ann Sweeting in Center Point. Nathan was a longtime Prairieburg area farmer and retired in 1988. While farming he also worked at Wilson's Meat Packing Plant. He was a member of the Center Point American Legion Dye Benion Post No. 297, Victory Baptist Church, National Farmers Organization and Buffalo Creek Square Dancers group. He was a 4-H leader, loved to play baseball and basketball, and go fishing and hunting. He was a huge Chicago Cubs fan but most of his time he spent with his family.
Memorials may be directed to the Victory Baptist Church, Center Point, in Nathan's memory.
