Marie is survived by her loving daughter, Colette Cook of Cedar Rapids; brother, Paul (Geri) Crock, Mechanicsville; sister, Leona (Les) Johnson, Denver, Colo.; sisters-in-law, Jan Spath of Mechanicsville and Cheri Crock of Cedar Rapids; numerous nieces and nephews; and many close friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lucille (2001), and brother-in-law, Harry (2014) Seelman of Oxford; brother, Robert (2014) of Cedar Rapids; brother-in-law, Richard Spath (2013) of Depoe Bay, Ore.; and sister-in-law, Jeri Kavanagh and her husband, Tom, of Otis, Ore.
Marie was born Jan. 17, 1926, in Cedar County, Iowa, to Clarence and Nellie (Cessford) Crock. She graduated from Tipton High School in 1943 and attended Paris Academy Beauty School in Cedar Rapids. In 1945, she came to Mechanicsville where she worked as a beautician for many years. She married James "Jim" L. Cook on March 7, 1952, in Vinton, Iowa. She then worked with Jim in the Cook Hardware Store from the mid-1970s, until Jim retired in 1990. She and Jim traveled the country to attend American Legion conventions and to visit family and friends.
Marie will be remembered as a kind and thoughtful person to her many nieces, nephews, friends and Colette's dogs, Oakie, Jamaica and Daylia. She looked forward to beginning each day with her coffee group and treasured her Mechanicsville friends. Marie also enjoyed gardening in her many flower gardens, her bridge clubs and eating at Dittoes Restaurant. She was an active member in many organizations including the United Presbyterian Women, the Red Hat Society, garden club, American Legion Auxiliary and Cedar County Historical Society. In 2013, she donated the tinshop that had been located on the second floor of Cook Hardware to the Cedar County Historical Society.
Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of Mechanicsville, Mechanicsville Garden Club or Mechanicsville American Legion Auxiliary Unit 309.
The family extends a sincere thank you to Marie's caregivers, Marilyn Judd, JoAnn Pearson and Hospice of Mercy and to her many friends and family who offered support.
