Mary Hattie Bailey Tonne, 94, of Mount Vernon, passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, at Solon Care Center. Visitation for Mary will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at Morgan Funeral Choices in Mount Vernon. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. Burial Mount Zion Cemetery, rural Mount Vernon.
Surviving Mary is her husband of 72 years, Warren; six daughters, Patricia Storla of Mount Vernon, Carol (Bob) Swiech of Houston, Texas, Nancy (Mark) Hansen of Grand Ledge, Mich., Julie (Mark) Brannaman of Lisbon, Holly (Rob) Sautter of Rockford, Ill., and Anna (Robert) Broulik of Lisbon; 14 grandchildren, Kevin (Kathy) Storla, Lisa (Mark) Henik, Carey Storla, Megan (Rich) Johnson, Molly (Jim) Bigford, Erin (Aaron) Borton, Mary Genevieve (Jim) Kacmar, Phillip Gardner, Emy Sautter, Ben Sautter, Danielle (Joe) Gudenkauf, Abby (Tim) Keegan, Luke (Crystal) Broulik and Amber (Spencer) Jordan; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Also surviving is her twin sister, Myrna Carter of Marion.
Preceding Mary in death were her father, Earl Bailey; her mother, Lillian (Shakespeare) Bailey; and a brother-in-law, Mark Carter, Lauren Tonne and John Tonne.
She was born Sept. 26, 1920, in Cedar Rapids, in her grandparents' home. Mary graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids and Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She participated in the Wesley Foundation and taught for two years in a country school north of Mount Vernon. She married Warren Edward Tonne Dec. 30, 1941. They lived and farmed north of Mount Vernon where they raised six daughters, until they retired in 1976.
Mary was a member and very active in the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church where she served for many years as superintendent of Sunday school. She graduated from Perkins School of Theology of Southern Methodist University and attended the Iowa United Methodist Conference each year. In Mary's later years, she attended a nutrition class at Kirkwood and initiated and instructed weekly exercise classes at S.E. Linn Community Center, Lisbon, and also at Summit Pointe Retirement Community, Marion.
She exemplified the "doer of good deeds" and instilled the human values of compassionate giving of oneself to family members and friends in need.
Mary enjoyed bird watching, going to bridge club, social circle, United Methodist Women's Club and League of Women Voters. She loved reading and going to her book clubs. Most of all, Mary enjoyed time with her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Mary's honor may be directed to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
