Iowans in the market to don and deck themselves out head-to-toe can take advantage of the annual tax-free holiday Aug. 1 and 2. But shoppers need to make sure to double check their carts before reaching the register, as only certain items qualify for the exemption.
For example, golf clothing, caps, dresses, shirts, skirts and pants qualify, but golf gloves do not. Belts with buckles attaches are OK, but minus the buckle and it still is taxed.
The legislature passed a law creating the tax free holiday in 2000, and the annual two-day occurrence now in its 15th iteration for select clothing and footwear.
For a complete list of exceptions, check out the Iowa Department of Revenue's website.
