How has the atmosphere on the Nebraska campus been with the anticipation of becoming a part of the Big Ten?
Well one thing is for sure, Nebraska students are nothing else but thrilled to be rid of the Big 12 and join the prestigious conference that is the Big Ten.
"Overall, it is just a great thing for Nebraska," freshman broadcasting major Nedu Izu said. "We expect big things not only from the football team but all of Husker athletics."
Husker students have many reasons why they have already fallen in love with the Big Ten conference.
The first and primary reason is there is no Texas. The fans here in Lincoln will never forgive that state after what happened in the Big 12 championship game. Everyone is as bitter as ever and can now breath a sigh of relief not having the Longhorns on the schedule this season (since Texas has beaten Nebraska the last six times they have played each other).
The second reason is no more Dan Beebe. The commissioner of the Big 12 has been accused of anything from paying off referees to purposely sending the Huskers to poor bowl games. Beebe is probably just as happy to be rid of Nebraska as Husker fans are of him.
Another reason is the amount of bowl opportunities the Big Ten has at its disposal. This year the Big Ten had six teams play either on New Years Day or sometime after compared to the three that the Big 12 had. This doesn't necessarily mean that the Big Ten is a better conference than the Big 12 but it does prove to show that even if you finish in the middle of the pack of the Big Ten there is still a chance for a New Years day bowl.
"It is going to be incredible playing in a league that has such great tradition and is really a better fit for us," sophomore music performance major Mark Carney said. "It will be nice to play other teams from the Midwest too."
Some of those games against other teams from the Midwest are intriguing to many of the students here especially the Big Ten opening showdown against likely preseason favorite Ohio State.
"That Ohio State game is going to be crazy!" Izu said. "I have been talking to a lot of my friends and they are already planning how early they are going to get up for that game in order to get good seats."
That is the attitude of the students here in Lincoln. The upcoming spring game has even more hype than ever due to the change in conferences.
Yes, buzz on campus is the excitement about the readiness for the Huskers to enter into the Big Ten.
Here is the real question though: Is the Big Ten ready for Nebraska?
