Iowa baseball swept by Maryland, falls to No. 8-seed in Big Ten tournament

The Iowa baseball team has made the Big Ten Conference tournament. But just barely.

The Hawkeyes lost Saturday afternoon at Maryland, 10-8, getting swept in the three-game series that ended the regular season. Iowa lost its last five games and dropped all the way to the No. 8-seed in this coming week's eight-team tournament.

Top-seeded Indiana is the first-round opponent Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Omaha's TD Ameritrade Park. The Hoosiers swept Iowa in a three-game series that began Big Ten play for both clubs.

Iowa finished Big Ten play at 12-12 and is 30-22 overall. This will be the sixth consecutive Big Ten tournament appearances for the Hawkeyes, which is a school record.

The rest of the field is Michigan (2 seed), Illinois (3), Minnesota (4), Nebraska (5), Maryland (6) and Ohio State (7). The winner automatically qualifies for an NCAA regional.
