Big Ten expansion timetable could be accelerated

Apr. 18, 2010 4:52 pm
According to a story in Sunday's Chicago Tribune, high-ranking Big Ten Conference representatives were meeting Sunday in Washington, D.C., and discussing the possibility of expansion of the conference. The Big Ten said over the winter the process could take as many as 12 to 18 months.
The Tribune's Teddy Greenstein reported that if Sunday's meetings result in a mandate to expand, Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany could begin the process of contacting other conferences about interest in their schools joining the Big Ten during Bowl Championship Series meetings this week in Arizona.
Greenstein reported the Big Ten wants to add at least three schools for a 14-team league. A 16-school league also is a possibility.
The Tribune said Notre Dame remains what it called "Option A."
