Iowa City Police locate man believed to have caused more than $6,000 in tire slashing damage

The Iowa City Police say they have identified and charged a man for a three day tire slashing spree in mid November.
According to a police media release, the ICPD used video surveillance to identify Alexander Alvarado, 21, slashing the tires of multiple cars in the area of Nevada Avenue, Miami Drive, Arizona Avenue, Hollywood Boulevard and Union Road. Officers determined that during a span of three days from Nov. 14 to Nov. 16, 42 tires were slashed in this area causing an estimated $6,300 in damages.

Police met with Alvarado after inspecting the video footage and he admitted to doing the slashing, according to the release. An arrest warrant of second degree criminal mischief was issued for Alvarado, who is already in the custody of the United States Marshals Service for an unrelated weapons charge, according to the release. This is a Class D Felony.
Police say Alvarado will be transferred to the Johnson County Jail to deal with the criminal mischief charge after the matter of the weapons charge has been worked through.
