MOUNT VERNON - The Mount Vernon boys' basketball team picked up its ninth win of the season on Jan. 30, topping Maquoketa, 74-56.
The Mustangs shot 37 percent from the field and about 23 percent of their 3-pointers against the Cardinals. They also managed to make 60 percent of their free throws.
After the recent absence of one of the Mustangs' key starters, they knew they were going to need someone to step up to the plate. Coach Wes Burns selected junior Nick Bevans, who was willing to fill the spot.
'I felt that I had worked hard and was looking forward to the game,” Bevans said.
For a first-time starter, this was an exciting game.
'I was really nervous, but at the same time really excited,” he said.
For any player, a chance to get into the game is a very fun and rewarding experience. Bevans did an excellent job in his first start, making five of the Mustangs' first seven points.
'Looking back on the night, I feel I played a fairly good game,” he said.
The Mustangs lead at halftime, 33-26, and kept the momentum throughout the second half.
With the Mustangs nearing the postseason, they are hoping to keep getting better.
'We hope to win the rest of our games,” Bevans said.
