Brendes, Robert Ralph
Robert Ralph Brendes, 66, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011, in ManorCare Health Services, Cedar Rapids. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at Christ Church Presbyterian, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Tim Dyck and the Rev. Lucille King. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors by VFW Post 788.
Survivors include his wife, Lori; mother, Jeannette Brendes of Clarence; his siblings, Jim (Jan) Brendes of Martelle, Barbara (Bob) Young of Cedar Rapids and Galen (Sherry) Brendes of Marion; nieces and nephews, Jodi Weber, Gina Becthold, Jamie Brendes, Tony Young and Christopher Young; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Also surviving are Bob's stepdaughters from his previous marriage, Jennifer (Leon) Bohn and Janelle Solberg, both of Cedar Rapids; and five stepgrandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Brendes; and his niece, Melissa Ann Brendes.
Born Feb. 27, 1945, in Davenport, Iowa, Robert was the son of Ralph and Jeannette (Meyer) Brendes. He attended the University of Iowa for three years, Coe, and Kirkwood Community College. Robert served his country in the United States Army in Vietnam. On May 26, 2007, he was united in marriage to Lori Florence. Bob retired from Evergreen Packaging after 30 years of service as a manager of computer programming.
Robert was a member of Christ Church Presbyterian and VFW Post 788. He enjoyed golf, racquetball, traveling, cards, crossword puzzles and playing with his buddies, his cats Molly and Magee.
Memorials may be directed to the Melissa Ann Brendes Memorial Scholarship Fund in Robert's memory.
