Joe Lawton, 67, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016, in Denver, Colo., on his way to visit family in Australia with his wife, Lori (Loraine Blank).
A gathering for family and friends will be Thursday, Jan. 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Kirkwood Room (next to Lensing Funeral & Cremation, Iowa City).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Lori Lawton for West Liberty High School.
Joe was born Jan. 3, 1949, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of Richard and Dolores Ewing Lawton. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Iowa.
Joe taught science for 25 years in Australia and another 15 years in Iowa City and West Liberty.
Joe loved dancing, motorcycle riding, family and writing haikus.
Survivors include his wife, Lori; his son, Gabe (Genevieve); grandsons, Cassidy and Monte; siblings, Rick Lawton (Sally Swope), Sioux Lawton (Glen Alden), Khristen Lawton (Mark Oxley), David Lawton (Jana) and Damien Lawton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Delores.
