Margaret "Maggie" C. Read, 94, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, at Marie Steiner Kelting Hospice Home in Chaska, Minn. Per Margaret's request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids, with a luncheon and visitation to follow. We invite you to attend if you are able. The family will have a graveside service at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.
Memorials have been established for the Minnesota Braille and Talking Book Library (MBTBL) and Marie Steiner Kelting Hospice Home.
Margaret was born Nov. 8, 1921, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Laura Andersen. She was a 1939 graduate of Burlington High School. She was united in marriage to Charles Cooper in 1943. Charlie died in July 1975. Margaret married Lloyd Brueck in 1977. Lloyd died in 1978. Margaret married Tom Read in 1983. Tom died in 1997.
Margaret worked for the Burlington school district for 20 years, 10 years as treasurer of the high school and 10 years in district purchasing. Margaret moved to Marion in 1997 and then to Minneapolis in 2015 to be closer to family.
Margaret had many passions over the years, especially tennis, bridge, her family and cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes and the New York Yankees.
Margaret was a member of PEO Chapter KJ, the Cedar Rapids Presbyterian Church and a 75-year member of First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, serving as an elder.
Margaret is survived by her son, John (Brenda) Cooper of Chanhassen, Minn.; her daughter, Molly (Mike) Mount of Bend, Ore.; her granddaughter, Sarah (Matt) Thunselle, Dayton, Minn.; her grandson, Brett (Laura) Cooper, Sioux Falls, S.D.; two great-grandchildren, Aurora Margaret Thunselle (age 2) and Baby Thunselle, Dayton, Minn.; a stepson, Tom (Betsy) Read, Cedar Rapids; stepgrandchildren, Peter (Bethany) Read, Des Moines, and Katherine Read (Ben Sebers), Cedar Rapids; a brother, John Andersen, Geneva, Ill.; sisters, Irene Peale, Sarasota, Fla., and Mary Ann Purcell, Norman, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Alice; two brothers, Eugene and Paul Andersen; and three sisters, Emma Laura Andersen, Dorothy Friedman and Edna Beavo.
Margaret was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who always looked on the bright side and will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
