DES MOINES — Monday's games at the boys' state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena:
CLASS 1A QUARTERFINALS
No. 6 JESUP (22-3) vs. NO. 3 GLADBROOK-REINBECK (23-2)
* Time: 3:45 p.m.
* Tournament history: Jesup was previously at state in 1995 and 1999, both third-place finishes. Gladbrook-Reinbeck was a tournament rookie last year and won the 1A state championship.
* Coaches: Joe Smeins is in first season as head coach at Jesup. Previously coached Cedar Falls NU High girls' team. Scott Kiburis is 262-158 in 18 seasons as head coach, 129-42 in seven seasons at G-R. Also has coaching experience at three schools in Colorado.
* Top players: Ethan Wyant, a 5-foot-11 junior guard, leads Jesup in scoring (18.3 ppg) and assists, and is second in rebounding. Junior forward Tyler Lienau averages 13.7 ppg and has a team-best 64 steals. Junior guard Joe Smoldt leads the 1A field in scoring (24.8), placing fourth overall in 1A in the state. He is the only G-R player who averages double-figure scoring. Four of the five combined losses for these teams came to clubs from Class 2A, including state tourney qualifiers Dike-New Hartford and Anamosa.
CLASS 2A QUARTERFINALS
No. 4 CASCADE (20-3) vs. No. 5 OSAGE (20-4)
* Time: 6:35 p.m.
* Tournament history: This is the eighth trip, the third straight, for Cascade. The Cougars placed fourth in 2014 and 1998, and third in 2001. This is the fifth state appearance for Osage, the first since 2006. The Green Devils won it all in 1923 and 1995 (Class 2A).
* Coaches: This is retiring Cascade Coach Al Marshall's swansong. He is 736-326 in 47 seasons as a head coach at Cascade and Cascade Aquin. Mike Brahn is in his first season as a head coach, after eight years as an assistant at Osage.
* Top players: Cascade's offense is dominated by 6-foot-7 senior center Devin Green, who averages 20.5 points and shoots 62 percent from the field. He also averages 8.9 rebounds per game. Senior guard Trace Hoffman averages 10.2 points for the Cougars, who allow a 2A tourney low 42.3. Green will have a four-inch height advantage on Osage, whose tallest player is 6-3 sophomore Lucas Schwamman. Colin Havel (12.3 ppg), Caleb Bushbaum (12.3) and Drew Olson (11.8) lead a balanced scoring attack.
