Editor's note: David Sojka of the Bicyclists of Iowa City agreed to send us daily reports from the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, which will make a stop in Cedar Rapids on Thursday. The ride started Sunday. Here is David Sojka's report from Day 5:
7:20 am: In Garwin, 15 miles done over some decent hills. Today has the most climb of the week so I hope that was a large portion of it. Cooler this morning, feels more humid and we should have a tailwind. Many campers spent the night or a portion of it on schools, church, etc, floors due to the storms that blew through. I usually try to get a hotel for one night mid week and last night was the night so I got lucky. Have 67 miles to go.
9:02 a.m.: What a difference a day makes. Great weather, 33 miles in. Tell Cedar Rapids to make more poppyseed kolaches as they are running out of them in Clutier.
2:35 p.m.: Perfect day to ride. Cooler temps, tail wind and old friends. We are 70 miles down.
4:03 p.m.: Done for the day - 88 total miles. You never know when biking, but today was the longest day of the week but the best in my opinion. Tail wind and cooler, led to a fun day. Ready for some poppy seed kolaches. Lance Armstrong can eat all the poppy seed he wants with no fear of testing.
