MANCHESTER - The West Delaware Student Council held its first Dance Marathon on March 20 with students spending nearly five hours participating in games and showing off their dance moves to raise $2,900 for the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
The Student Council provided a photo booth, multiple games and a projector for viewing March Madness as well as glow sticks, T-shirts and concessions.
Student Council adviser Megan Jack was overwhelmingly pleased with the outcome of the event.
'I was impressed with both the turnout and the amount of money that was raised by Student Council for this great cause,” Jack said.
The night began at 7 with dancing and music provided by DJ Casey Klein. Students then participated in a Hula-Hoop contest, where they competed to see who could last the longest.
Senior Michaela Downs won the competition.
'I haven't Hula-Hooped since I was really young, so it was fun to do it again,” Downs said.
Next, students took part in an air band competition, where groups performed to their favorite song.
'I got to make my own team and participate in front of everyone and rock out,” freshman Tristan Voelker said. 'It was thrown together at the last minute, so it was cool to see how it turned out.”
Student Council secretary Katie Scherbring appreciates the help the community and surrounding businesses provided.
'The community really helped us go above and beyond on our goal,” said Scherbring, a senior. 'It was awesome that we could get that much support.”
Students hope this event becomes a tradition.
'We got to help out a great cause while getting involved with something fun,” sophomore Anna Thole said. 'I hope people look at how much money we earned and want to get involved with it next year.”
