Brown crowns to West, Monticello

Sep. 5, 2013 10:13 pm
IOWA CITY -- Iowa City West's girls and Monticello's boys rode 1-2-3 finishes to team titles at the Bob Brown Invitational cross country meet Thursday at the Ashton Cross Country Course.
West edged Cedar Rapids Kennedy for the girls' crown, 34-36. Ashlynn Yokom, a senior who was the Class 4A state runner-up last year, ran away with the individual crown in 14:56. Emmie Skopec and Jessie Skopec were second and third.
That was enough to offset Kennedy's depth. Alyssa Averhoff led the Cougars to a 4-6-7-8-10 tally among their scorers.
Two-time defending 2A state champion Monticello ran through the boys' field, with all of its scorers in the top eight. The Panthers scored 20 points; Kennedy was second with 75.
Michael Melchert was the individual champ in 16:09. He was followed by teammates Nick Meyers and Ben Ahlrichs. Eric Lenz of Tipton was fourth.
