Cammack, George William
George William Cammack died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, in Verde Valley Medical Center, Sedona, Ariz., from complications of pneumonia.
He was born Sept. 26, 1930, in Newton, Iowa, to Hobart Zenus and Zillah Ann, nee Willits Cammack. He spent three years in the U.S. Navy before earning an Industrial Administration degree from Iowa State University. After a brief stint with Firestone Tire and Rubber in Cedar Falls, he worked for nearly 32 years at Collins Radio, later Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids. He married Roene Mae, nee Burghardt, on July 1, 1961, and they lived in Marion, Iowa, for 35 years. They raised sons, John M. (Birmingham, Ala.), and Thomas H. (Le Claire, Iowa) who share their lives and love with Ari and Tammi respectively. He is also survived by his brother, Hobart (Janel); aunt, Evelyn Cammack; sister-in-law, LuAnn Berthei; brother-in-law, Veryl (Pat) Burghardt; and numerous nieces, nephews and their children whom he loved and enjoyed.
In 1996, George and Roene relocated to Sedona, Ariz.
George enjoyed any music, especially earlier jazz and classical music. He sang in the Collins' Men's chorus and the choir of any church he joined. He enjoyed woodworking and built numerous items for his home as well as for friends and family. He was active in St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, and Christ Lutheran Church, Sedona. He especially enjoyed the property committee but as his strength failed, he found a new passion for the last and the least people of the world and so worked on the Social Concerns Committee. He was a 50 year member of the Grand Lodge in Marion, Iowa.
A public memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 11, at Christ Lutheran Church, 25 Chapel Rd., Sedona, AZ 86336.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Christ Lutheran Church of St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105-3678.
