Damien was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Aug. 12, 1958, to Dr. Russell L. Collins and Shirley A. (Patton) Collins, MSW. Following graduation from Kennedy High School, he attended Hamilton College, graduating with a degree in accounting in 1982. Damien met Martha Stamps in 1985 and they were united in marriage on July 5, 2005. They enjoyed their life together for 30 years.
Damien worked several different jobs, but the job he loved the most and the one which was most fulfilling and rewarding was working at Jane Boyd Community House, where he had the opportunity to work with children and formulate their love and understanding of sports. He coached teams for the baseball program, basketball program and started a flag football program and track program (this was for one season). His passion was working with young children, and the children loved having him for a coach.
Damien enjoyed working on cars and being around his grandchildren. He had two friends who meant a lot to him, Elmer Mims and Kyle Doolin, as well as two nieces, Mercedes Davis and Louella Prince.
He made an impression on many and will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Damien's honor may be made to the American Cancer Society. Please visit www.cancer.org or the local office at 4080 First Ave. NE, Suite 101, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402.
