What's going on in Vegas with MSU-Iowa?

Oct. 2, 2013 12:04 pm
(UPDATE AT BOTTOM OF POST)
Does anyone have an explanation for this:
Wednesday morning at casino sports books across Las Vegas, significant changes were made to the Michigan State-Iowa betting lines. Which means fairly significant sums were bet on the Spartans this morning to make the sports books alter their lines.
Here is the data as presented by VegasInsider.com.
Within a 45-minute period this morning ...
Iowa went from being a 1-point favorite to a 1-point underdog at Wynn Las Vegas, Stations casinos, Jerry's Nugget, and the LVH (formerly the Las Vegas Hilton).
Iowa went from being 1-point favorite to a 1.5-point dog at the Stratosphere and at the South Point. It was soon readjusted to MSU by 1 at the South Point.
Iowa went from being a 1.5-point favorite to a 1-point dog at the Coasts casinos.
Why? Why was there this sudden betting surge on the Spartans this morning, a Wednesday morning, that was enough to tilt the lines like that? The lines -- though not all of them -- tend to fluctuate to various degrees all week -- but this was a swift movement all at once.
Whoever correctly clairifies this for you (and me) gets an entry into the Hlog Hall of Fame.
UPDATE: This came in a tweet from Covers.com:
LVH tells us they just went with the market. Sounds like a case of steam at 1 or 2 books and other books following suit.
In sports betting, "steam" is when a line starts to move rapidly.
Covers.com later told me "A couple of different books told us they expect it to swing back again thru week."
In another tweet, Covers said "Jay Rood at Mirage is 1 of the best in the biz. Tells us: "Tell them to relax in Iowa. They'll be the favorite come kickoff."
There's nothing "unusual" going on. I just found it interesting. I still do.
Something's up in Las Vegas this morning
