Charles "Chuck" Smith, 74, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Friday, Dec. 2, at the Anamosa United Methodist Church with interment at a later date in Queen City, Mo. The Rev. Marty Schumacher and the Rev. Laurie Riley will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. Thursday at Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., following the visitation.
Memories and condolences may be left at www.goettschonline.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Anamosa Masonic Lodge No. 46 to support the Kid Safe Child ID program. Chuck loved kids. Every child was an opportunity for him to tell a story and to teach.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Kay (George); three children, Janis (James) Johnson, Wayland, Jeff (Dawn) Smith, Gower, Mo., and Julia Marzullo-Reneau, Fort Worth, Texas; seven grandchildren, Justin (Beth), Jami and Jacob Johnson, Fletcher and Mitchell Smith and Noel and Nikolas Marzullo-Reneau; his parents, Dwight and Delta Smith, Albia; his sister, Donna Smith, Amarillo, Texas; a brother, Larry (Sandy) Smith; and niece, Amber, both of Quincy, Ill.
Charles Leon Smith was born March 19, 1942, in Albia, Iowa. He was the son of Dwight and Delta (Whitlock) Smith. He graduated from Albia High School in 1960 and continued his education at Centerville Community College, William Penn College and graduated from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College with degrees in social science and physical education in 1965. Chuck taught at numerous Iowa schools, including Tri-County High School in Thornburg, Dow City High School, Mormon Trail High School in Humeston, WACO in Wayland, and finished his teaching career by spending 20 years at Anamosa High School, primarily as the government teacher. He retired from teaching in 2002 but couldn't stay off the softball diamond, so he continued to coach softball through the summer of 2014.
During the 37 years, he taught and coached hundreds of athletes in the following sports: girls' softball, girls' and boys' track, girls' and boys' cross country, girls' and boys' basketball, sophomore football and even as an Anamosa Middle School volleyball coach. He served as the Anamosa High School activities director for several years. He was recognized by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union as a 600-game winning softball coach and for his 25 years as a high school track coach. Other coaching awards included multiple awards for Softball Coach of the Year. Chuck was active in the Anamosa community, attended the United Methodist Church, was an active member and officer of the Anamosa Masonic Lodge No. 46, a past member of the Anamosa Rotary Club and currently served on the Anamosa City Council.
